Antique Seychour Kelleh

Circa 1890
350 × 125 cm 11’5” x 4’1”
£10,000

Description

A tribal antique Caucasian Seychour Kelleh woven in the North Kuba region, Dagestan, in the late 19th century.  The varying dyes of blue and changes in dye add a lot of interest and character to this ancient piece of weaving.  With vivid terracotta tones, pinks, greens and off white dyes, the palette is fun and vibrant which is often the way with Caucasian pieces.  They loved to weave interesting and usually colourful rugs and these longer runners too.  In fabulous pile, soft wool and original kilim ends can be seen at both fringes.
