Description

An Antique Shirvan rug in wonderful original condition, showing the intact fringes and lovely natural dyes.  Woven with an almost black main background colour, the vibrant pale blues and ivory wool border really sing and bring a lot of life to this antique caucasian rug.  We love the simple scattered Boteh motifs in the middle with latch-hook medallions, washed and ready for the floor, this sweet tribal rug dates from around 1910, so over 100 years old.

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are generally found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
