Finally at the top of the design, is another palmette design, but this time a pair of peacocks are depicted either side. The remainder of the field has been beautifully decorated with Tumeric sprays, the whole rug surrounded by a rose and palmetto border.
Amazing to have a pair of rugs still together, with many generations since the rugs production, it is more often the case that the pair has been split up. This pair are in very good original condition and we have cleaned the rugs throughly which has enhanced the colours and softened the wool further. Kashan was a center of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets and rugs are known as Mohtasham.
