Pair of Antique Kashan rugs

Circa 1920
208 × 137 cm 6’9” x 4’5”
£9,200

Description

A rare and stunning pair of antique Kashan rugs, dating from the early 20th century. Kashan was the centre of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets and rugs are known as Kurk or Mohtasham Kashan.

Early 20th century examples such as this pair of rugs were woven for the Western market, with the classical medallion design and elaborate corner spandrels filled with detailed floral patterns.  Ideal for the US and European markets.  Rare to find them with an ivory off-white central design, more-often Kashan rugs were predominantly blue and red.  It lightens the whole palette of these beautiful rugs, allowing the pinks, greens and pale blues.  In very good condition all over, a fine weave and nice pile throughout.  Rare to find pairs of rugs, these were woven around 100 year olds ago and are highly decorative.
