Description

This antique Farahan carpet, dating from the late 19th century has a wonderful light background with an all over pattern of flowers.  The whole palette of muted faded natural red dyes from over 140 years ago are beautiful and balance well with the green dyes and deep blue border colour.  Scattered lower areas of pile, but in general great order.  Supplied with our underlay to add body and strength to an antique carpet, this product is excellent to help preserve carpets.

Farahan or Fereghan carpets were woven in Western Persia and produced varying designs and weaves.  Some rugs they revelled in showcasing their intricate weaving techniques and wove stunning fine intricate pattern rugs, Arak which is close by, helped create Sarouk-Farahan rugs which often had brighter colours and tighter weaves to showcase this.  They also wove rustic and looser weave carpets such as this Farahan, full of great vegetable dyes which have faded beautifully.  Knot count is not as tight but a really lovely nice handle and feel.  They suit many interiors from country houses to town houses.

Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
