Description

Ancient antique Farahan carpet from the mid 19th century to 1870, woven with the rare natural ivory wool background, one of the rarest colours to find.  The classic all-over ‘Herati pattern’ has been for the main pattern in the main field.  Used in the 17th-18th century, this Herati pattern depicts two fish swimming around a water-lily, this can be seen more clearly on this large scale in the main field.  As the leaves look more like fish with a head and eye….the wool is very soft and lustrous and the colours are stunning early dyes saffron, pale greens, reds, pale blues and aubergine which has corroded in areas.  The deep indigo border is a great compliment to the design and palette, with nice contrast and a classic floral and leaf scrolling design.

The wool pile is medium high over the majority of this 150 year old carpet, with some areas still requiring some minimal attention.  We have just had this beautiful carpet professionally photographed so wanted to add it to our site in its original state.  We can use our experienced workshop to tidy up the sides and ends where needed.  Plus we have a couple of small areas of old moth damage (which can be seen at the bottom of the image in the border) this can be easily rewoven to match using antique wool.  This carpet has been cleaned and moth treated, it only requires minimal restoration if required.

A rare and exceptional piece, ideal for a drawing room, dining room or entrance hall – it would add immense character and be a joy to choose fabrics to work with it, or place in an existing scheme.

We work closely with interior designers and private customers all over the UK, showing our collection of rare and beautiful antique carpets and contemporary rugs in situ, to help you find the perfect carpet to suit a room.  Contact us in your preferred way we would love to be of assistance to you.

. . .

Fereghan or Farahan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
