Description

An almost square stunning Farahan with a beautifully drawn scrolling border design in varying blues, the elegant palmettes in the main field flow on top of a deep deep blue, to almost black.  Creating a striking palette of dyes, rich in colour and ancient in design, a truly remarkable piece.  The brick reds in the border vary to soft reds as you work your way around, which is down to the abrash (dye change) and oxidisation to the natural dyes over the last 150 years.

Amazing square size, Fereghan or Farahan as they are often known were one of few weaving areas that produced square sizes.  Areas of low pile are visible, this ancient carpet shows mainly original fringe ties at both ends.  A few areas have been repaired, but the majority has been retained.

Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
