Description

A bold and vivid antique Karachov Kazak rug woven in the Caucasus mountains in Azerbaijan by Armenian weavers.  Also known as “Karachopf” these tribal weavings were made using soft wool on a woollen foundation, giving them a light feel to touch and handle.  This marvellous example was woven around 1860-1870 and uses beautiful rare green natural dyes as well as the more interesting yellow border.

. . .

This colour palette of antique Karachopf rugs is rarer than the younger blue and red types.  The bold geometric motifs and format of this rug are typical of rugs from this region with the four latch-hook motifs in each corner of the main design and a white central motif.  The variety of colours are exquisite and due to the rugs age have a great soft appeal to the eye.

In very good original condition with minimal old restoration to the centre and corners.  The wool pile is medium to high throughout and no old stains or marks.  Cleaned and the ends and sides have been professionally secured.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.
