Description

This late 19th century Caucasian Shirvan rug has a really beautiful ‘Tulip’ design border, these stylised Tulips are woven with great colours and work so well on the ivory border colour. The rich intense red dyes are used on the background and are scattered with a random array of flowers and hook motifs.  A fabulous geometric antique rug woven in Azerbaijan in around 1890.  Caucasian rugs are famed for their bold patterns and glorious colours, the late 19th century pieces have some of the best colours.  The size is unusual as it is almost square in proportions measuring 4’5″ x 4 feet.

. . .

The condition is fair to low with wear showing in places, a fine weave on this Shirvan rug of over 130 years old.  Scattered wear in places as you can see on the additional images but with excellent underlay we supply with every rug it is still a durable and beautiful antique rug useable for the floor.

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
