Description

An Antique Kuba Afshan long rug in fantastic original condition, the pile is thick and lush to touch. Kuba is a rug producing town located in the north-east of the Caucaus next to the Caspian Sea. The port of Baku in Kuba had its own school for carpet-making.  This Afshan design originated from this school in Baku’s Khila village.  “Afshan” refers to a specific style that was adapted from the Tabriz Persian weaving school.

. . .

Whereas Afshan carpets from Tabriz have soft, subtle colors without much variation, the Baku version of the Afshan design stands out in its use of contrasting colors: red, white, and dark blue. The wool carpet is decorated throughout with flowers; individual petals frame the edges.  This Caucasian piece also uses the common ‘Kufic’ border design, this design dates back to the 17th century.

An amazing Caucasian rug with great design history and a fantastic array of colours, the indigo is vibrant and the ivory white gives rug a lot of life. A real collectors piece in lovely condition.
