Description
A wonderful distressed antique Mahal carpet, with an all over large tulip floral design – this is an ancient design and connecting leaves and vines flow around it beautifully. Amazing greens, gold tones, pale blues and pink tones, the contrasting dark blue almost black border works so well with the whole composition and warm red terracotta background palette. A great almost square size too, which we rarely find, woven around 140 years ago.
Condition is distressed and worn in areas, it is in excellent structural order, with our sturdy anti-slip underlay (supplied in the price) this would aid the carpets condition greatly, as it stops the carpet moving around on the floor adding body to it.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
