Distressed Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1890
363 × 270 cm 11’10” x 8’10”
£7,500

Description

Warm reds, golds and pale blues on this lovely distressed antique Mahal carpet, with an all over Herati pattern – this is an ancient design taken from two fish swimming around a water-lily, which has changed over the centuries to show as two leaves around a flower.  The delightful design, easy to place in a room.

Condition is distressed and worn in areas, it is in good structural order, it does have a couple of areas at the bottom end of the carpet which are missing.  This could be improved with a patch or re-woven potentially too, this would be a costly exercise though.  With our sturdy anti-slip underlay (supplied in the price) this would aid the carpets condition greatly, as it stops the carpet moving around on the floor adding body to it.

We rarely hold distressed antique carpets in our inventory, unless they are early and decorative items such as this antique Mahal carpet.

Book in a showroom visit by appointment or request to view this lovely distressed antique Mahal carpet at home soon.  Or please request a home visit, we travel all over the UK showing our carpets and rugs in situ to help you select the ideal carpet for your home.

Having travelled to Ireland, Scotland and even Europe over the last 30 years we love to travel showing our carpets to customers and interior designers.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
