Rare Pair of Antique Farahan carpets

Circa 1860
325 × 174 cm 10’7” x 5’8”
£28,500

Description

A very rare pair of antique Farahan carpets woven in the mid 19th Century, stunning saturated ancient dyes, large scale palmette designs and vivid colours.  The famous ancient Harshang design can be seen in the main field too, which is a stylised pattern from a Crab, often seen in the borders of Caucasian rugs from Azerbaijan.  It is incredibly rare and unusual to find a pair of carpets from this region, they presumably would have been commissioned for the Western market, as their size is rare to find too, being narrower than most carpets.  Each carpet measures 325 x 174 cm / 10’8″ x 5’9″.

Farahan loved these rich pinkish red dyes, sage-muddy greens and pale blues, combined with a deep blue almost black in places background colour.  A lower pile height is apparent, areas of preservation/restoration have been completed extremely well by expert restorers, on this ancient pair of carpets which are over 160 years old.  Remarkable and amazing for us to have these in our collection, we are excited to offer them for sale, as they will look beautiful in the right setting.

. . .

Farahan or Fereghan carpets are unlike their neighbours Sarouk which are more formal often using an elaborate central medallion. Fereghan weavers preferred floral motifs of shrubs and vines using more green dyes and hints of yellow.  Fereghan or Farahan rugs were woven in the Arak district which was once the capital of Persia.  They wove a variety of designs with Sarouk-Fereghan rugs more classical in their structure and rugs from Malayer and Fereghan using palmettes, shrubs, geometric motifs.

Since the 18th Century, Farahan carpets from between Arak and Kashan have been among the best decorative carpets and rugs woven in ancient Persia.  The various mosaic designs of these rugs, of which there are around 20 variants compose of, the famous ‘Herati’ pattern, central motif designs, tree of life prayer designs and diamonds filled with rosettes.  The border designs are ornamented with angular palmettes, leaves, rosettes.  Colours tend to be light blue, purple/mauve tones, yellow or rare natural white ground.
