610 × 420 cm 20’ x 13’9”
£28,000

Description

Ancient and enormous antique Farahan carpet from the late 19th century, woven with a deep indigo blue wool background, and lovely minor borders of terracotta, and rare green dyes.  The classic all-over ‘Herati pattern’ has been used for the main pattern in the main field.  Used in the 17th-18th century, this Herati pattern depicts two fish swimming around a water-lily.  Wonderful pale greens, reds, pale blues and aubergine dyes which have corroded in areas over the last 130 plus years.

The wool pile is medium high, with some areas of lower pile and a couple of old pieces of minor restoration.

An exceptional oversize antique carpet, ideal for a drawing room, dining room or entrance hall – it would add immense character and be a joy to choose fabrics to work with it, or place in an existing scheme.

We work closely with interior designers and private customers all over the world, showing our collection of rare and beautiful antique carpets and contemporary rugs in situ, to help you find the perfect carpet to suit a room or interior.  Contact us in your preferred way we would love to be of assistance to you soon.

Fereghan or Farahan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
