Description

Saturated dyes with stunning geometric motifs on this gorgeous tribal antique Moghan runner from the Caucasus and in the Trans-Caucasian region of North-West Persia.  Dating from the late 19th century, the dyes are from the 1880-1890 period of weaving. With natural ivory wool, aubergine dyes, madder reds, deep indigo blues and beautiful pale blues and greens.  Moghan Kazak weavings will often use this repeating latch hook motifs and bold geometric designs.  All of which can be seen on this exciting tribal runner.

Condition wise it has a soft wool pile on 99% of this runner, with only slight lower pile in a few areas.  Overall condition is very good for this 140 year old piece.  No losses to the ends or damage, very useable with our strong underlay which aids a runner on the floor.  Preserving its condition further and stopping movement on the floor.

Rugs and runners bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation. Moghan rugs and runners were produced by Kazak weavers.

  • We professionally wash all our carpets and rugs, plus our expert restorer who has over 30 years experience will secure fringes and sides if necessary.
