Antique Mahal carpet

Description

An absolutely exquisite antique Persian Mahal carpet, with the rarest of all pale blue fields. We have seen probably less than 15 pale blue ground Mahal carpets,  and this one is just wonderful.

It is also a lovely small, usable size.  The design is very similar to the Ziegler & Co production which followed, and it is very likely that carpets like this one would have influenced the Ziegler & Co colours and design construction.  This carpet was woven in around 1880, which makes it 140 years old, but it remains in very good condition.

Please request a home visit to see this antique carpet in-situ, where you can select a convenient day and time for us to visit. Or book in a visit to our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey we would love to welcome you here.

We offer the professional service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire,  and anywhere else in UK by appointment. Having travelled to Ireland, Scotland and even Europe over the last 30 years we love to travel showing our carpets to customers and interior designers.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
