A very handsome antique Mahal carpet with a wonderful flowing repeating palmette design. The superb background terracotta colour is a really beautiful tone. which works so well with the contrasting indigo border and the yellows, oranges and pale blues.
Condition is distressed and worn in a few areas, and the carpet has been patched with small antique pieces historically. These repairs have been checked by us, and are all very secure and in good order. The carpet has also been cleaned, and the ends and selvedges have been checked and bound as necessary.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
