Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1910
424 × 318 cm 13’10” x 10’5”
£8,750

Description

This antique Mahal carpet is such an attractive and decorative carpet, with all natural dyes dating from 1910-1920.  We have always loved the pale blue the weavers used over 120 years ago and this lovely piece is full of this wonderful dye in the border. With a warm red to pinkish toned main background, the soft greens used for the large floral design are a particular highlight.

With a soft wool pile it has been professionally cleaned by our workshop and in original order it is ready to use on the floor.  Some wear is apparent but no holes or structural damage, please look at the additional images to see the condition up close.  Not having a central medallion makes this an easy antique carpet to place in a variety of rooms.  These decorative antique carpets from Northern Persia are full of charm and suit country houses to London apartments.

We offer the professional service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire,  and anywhere else in UK by appointment. Having travelled to Ireland, Scotland and even Europe over the last 30 years we love to travel showing our carpets to customers and interior designers.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
