Silk Qum carpet

Circa 1970
305 × 197 cm 10’ x 6’5”
£45,000

Description

A beautiful pale and incredibly fine silk Qum carpet with a very gentle colour palette. Woven by master weavers this piece has been signed and made with the finest silk and skill to create this highly detailed design. Woven with a Gonbad design,  one of the most masterful and revered Persian carpet patterns, featuring a highly detailed, symmetrical layout that replicates the intricate tile work and geometric perspectives found on the ceilings of ancient Persian palaces and mosques.  This beautiful silk Qum carpet is in perfect original condition and woven around 1970’s.

Qum was not a major weaving centre until the 1930’s. They took designs from other weaving centres such as Isfahan, Tabriz and Kashan and made them in to their own unique style. Qum’s are finely knotted and use high quality wool and silk. Large looms are set up in Qum so you often find oversized wool and silk Qum’s.  Designs generally consist of central medallions with elaborate corner spandrel designs, often these represent the ceiling designs in mosques.  Qum was also fond of producing hunting scene rugs, and unusual colours.
