Silk Qum carpet

Circa 1970
301 × 200 cm 9’10” x 6’6”
£30,000

Description

A wonderful quality pure silk Qum carpet, woven with a rare green main background.  Signed by a master weaver, this is an exceptionally fine and rare silk carpet.  Woven on a silk foundation and using the finest silk pile, the detailing is exceptional.  It would have taken 2 years to weave this piece all by hand.  Increasingly rare to find Qum carpets of this quality with age, woven around 1970 or slightly earlier.

Qum was not a major weaving centre until the 1930’s. They took designs from other weaving centres such as Isfahan, Tabriz and Kashan and made them in to their own unique style. Qum’s are finely knotted and use high quality wool and silk. Large looms are set up in Qum so you often find oversized wool and silk Qum’s.  Designs generally consist of central medallions with elaborate corner spandrel designs, often these represent the ceiling designs in mosques.  Qum was also fond of producing hunting scene rugs, and unusual colours.
