Description

The detail and quality of workmanship on this Antique Farahan rug from Malayer region in Western Central Persia, is to behold!  A fine weave and velvet like handle, this accomplished weaver has produced a classical rug of the highest order.  Every thought has been taken to execute the design from the central medallion to the traditional corner designs, known as spandrels.  Flowing vines with elegant flowers in the dark almost black background, velvet reds and early aubergine dyes can be seen.  A true masterpiece of weaving!

Pile height is excellent all over, finely woven and cut to perfection.  We love antique Farahan rugs and this 140-150 year old example is in near perfect condition.  No damage or wear, it has been used but very well looked after.  Please view all the extra images to see the quality of this antique rug up close.  We can also silk purple side-cords on this rug, which have been re-wrapped in places.

Fereghan carpets are unlike their neighbours Sarouk which are more formal often using an elaborate central medallion. Fereghan weavers preferred floral motifs of shrubs and vines using more green dyes and hints of yellow.  Fereghan or Ferahan rugs were woven in the Arak district which was once the capital of Persia.  They wove a variety of designs with Sarouk-Fereghan rugs more classical in their structure and rugs from Malayer and Fereghan using palmettes, shrubs, geometric motifs.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire and all over the UK & Europe by appointment.
