Description

This is an incredibly rare antique North-West Persian kelleh carpet from the early 19th Century.  Lattice design Kelleh carpets such as this are attributed to the north-west of Persia, woven in different areas – from Karadja to Kurdistan and the more tribal patterns are from Shashavan villages. Within the beautiful lattice design are varying shrubs and trees, with willow trees, fruit trees depicting pomegranates and beautiful colourful medallion patterns too. The border is often seen on Shashavan weavings, and Kurdish pieces too, the S motif in the border is known as a protective sign, warding off evil and used as the Sun in Caucasian rugs from Azerbaijan, often scattered throughout the main field of a rug.

So many fascinating elements to this early weaving, the yellow to camel toned border and background are also a rare colour combination.  More often colours would be contrasting blues and reds used for the main field and border.  A truly exceptional, collectable and rare Kelleh carpet dating around 1820-1830.  Due to the carpets age, restoration has taken place in some areas, which can be seen on the high resolution image, it does not detract from the beauty of this carpet in anyway in our opinion.  For its 200 year age restoration is fairly minimal and been done well a long time ago.  The dyes have faded differently due to their age.

View this rare carpet in our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey, or please request to view it at home soon.  It would be a pleasure to show it to you on your preferred day.
