Antique Ushak carpet

Circa 1880
330 × 284 cm 10’9” x 9’3”
£26,500

Description

Woven in the late 19th Century in Anatolia (Western Turkey), these exquisite hand-woven carpets have been produced since the start of the Ottoman period (1300-1922).  The mid to late 19th century examples such as this became more open and decorative in design and were commissioned more for the Western market in the US and Europe and have since rivalled the look of the famous Ziegler carpets from Persia.

In near perfect original condition, this stunning antique Ushak carpet has a dense wool pile all over. No areas of wear apparent and retains its original fringes, which are lower in some places, but all original.  The muted dyes are quite spectacular, woven around 1880-1890 these faded burnt orange with pinkish hues used for the background are a wonderful base colour.  With golden yellows, hints of pink, pale blues and sage greens used for this symmetrical pattern of leaves and floral patterns.  A main border in natural wool colour, which is a shade of off-white to grey tones, and with a large scale floral and vine design.  A rare squarish size too, this is a really beautiful example and we are excited to have recently added this to our inventory.

If you would like to reserve this carpet and arrange a viewing, please make contact in your preferred way, we would be happy to help you.

Often younger Ushak’s or Oushak’s will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs.  This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional.  We clean every carpet before offering it for sale and make sure the ends and fringes are secured.  A decorative subtle piece ideal for a soft scheme.

Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger Turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their sometimes softer palette than Persian carpets, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire the UK & Europe by appointment. Or visit our large barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey by appointment to view hundreds of rare carpets and rugs.
