Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1910
366 × 283 cm 12’ x 9’3”

A really attractive antique Mahal carpet dating from the early 20th century, in lovely original condition, with a soft wool pile throughout.  A few minimal lower areas but in general very good for its age.  Woven with natural dyes, delicate pinks and a muted soft pale blue border. Not having a central medallion makes this an easy antique carpet to place in a variety of rooms.  Woven around circa 1910 the colours have faded beautifully, these carpets from northern Persia are full of charm and suit country houses to London apartments.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
