A real masterpiece of Tehran weaving, this 120 year old antique Tehran carpet is a rare and exceptional carpet in outstanding original condition with unbelievable detail. The scrolling vines around the beautifully drawn central medallion in pale blues are so elegantly drawn, it is a marvel to see such workmanship. The elaborate corner designs are in deep blue with burgundy tones used throughout, the minor borders are exquisite flowing patterns of classical designs from early carpets. The fine kurk wool pile height is exceptional throughout this near perfect example of city weaving.
These exceptional fine carpets from Tehran were often commissioned for important people and private homes in the late 19th to early 20th century. Woven by the best expert master weavers the variety of natural dyes and quality of wool are of the highest order. One of the best examples of weaving we have seen from Tehran, the workmanship is truly breathtaking! A very rare and collectable carpet in amazing condition.
These town fine carpets would have been woven in workshops by the best weavers using a ‘cartoon’ drawing to know exactly where each knot of wool and silk highlight would be placed, looking for near perfection in the weave. The precision is quite remarkable and this exceptional piece highlights the skill of weaving from Persia during this period.
Tehran is the capital of Iran the country historically referred to as Persia, the greatest carpet producing country in the world. However, while traditional rugs have been woven in a variety of styles throughout Persia for centuries and centuries Tehran itself only became a centre of rug production after the great revival of Persian weaving in the late nineteenth century.
