Antique Abadeh carpet

Circa 1900
305 × 200 cm 10’ x 6’6”
£7,500

Description

A wonderful fine antique Abadeh carpet with the famous Zil-e-Sultan design.  Zil-e was the eldest son of the Shah of Persia around 1840.  Zil-e was not in line to the throne so he designed his own royal symbol which is the repeating design we see in the centre of this rug.  The elegant design consists of a vase filled with flowers with two birds sitting either side.

. . .

This repeating all over design is extremely intricate and showcases the quality of weaving from Abadeh.  An ivory border and main field background colour allows the subtle greens, pinks, reds and pale blues on the leaves, birds and flowers to shine.

A classical refined antique carpet which is in very good original condition.  The pile height is medium high, as these carpets never had a dense thick pile, the pile was always cut low to compliment the fine weave.  With small lower areas of pile height in places, this carpet still is in very good order with original fringing and minor borders intact.  Professionally cleaned the natural colours have come up beautifully and it is ready to be used on the floor.

On the north-Eastern edge of the Qasghai area, lies the town of Abadeh, which is the source for the Qasghai ‘Hebatlu’ design.  Which is a classical large medallion design with geometric floral motifs in each of the four corners.  Abadeh’s have a style entirely on their own from Qasghai rugs though and are no way comparable.  Their weave is generally finer with a woollen pile, on cotton warps and wefts, and the pile clipped quite thin.  Abadeh’s are known for an ivory white border with green leaves, such as this example and can use central medallion designs or the Zil-e-Sultan pattern we see here.
