Antique Angora carpet

Circa 1890
336 × 240 cm 11’ x 7’10”

This very pretty antique Angora carpet comes from a small town in Western Anatolia, woven in Ushak, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora carpets. The late 19th century weavers came from villages outside of Ushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation.  This is why Ushaks have a soft loose feel and their designs are more often very open.

Woven with gentle light greens, pinks and ivory dyes, it is perfect for a bedroom or drawing room looking for a subtle calm look.  In very good original condition, with small areas of wear.  The majority of the carpet has a soft pile showing all over, please view the additional images to see the condition.

Request a home visit to see this beautiful pale Angora Ushak carpet at home.  We travel nationwide, a free, no obligation service we have offered for over 30 years.

. . .

Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their open designs and wonderful colours, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.

We love to travel all over the UK and would be very happy to show you this carpet in situ and many more carpets to see which best suits your home.
