Antique Erivan rug

Circa 1910
160 × 100 cm 5’2” x 3’3”

Striking complex design on this antique Erivan rug heralding from central Armenia, circa 1900.  The fine weave and soft wool are typical of antique caucasian rugs from one of the world’s oldest cities. The wool on these rugs is exceptionally soft, they were famous for their natural blue dyes using star motifs.  This design is quite remarkable, with the pale green border an intricate pattern of scrolling horn designs.

The terracotta main field colour is balanced well with the pale turquoise design.  In excellent condition all over showing original kilim finish at one end.
