Antique Kurdish Kelleh

Circa 1890
483 × 200 cm 15’10” x 6’6”
£14,800

Description

A fantastic antique Kurdish Kelleh from Northern Persia in a narrow corridor size with exceptional dyes from the late 19th century.  Woven on a greyish, almost black in places background, the design consists of the famous ‘Herati’ design of a flower surrounded by two leaves.  This design dates back to the 16th century and used to resemble a water lily surrounded by two fish which has been stylised over the centuries.

. . .

The variation in the reds, greens, yellows and pale blues make this a vibrant and interesting long antique carpet, originally these sizes were woven for corridors or entrances in large homes.  The colours are really beautiful on this piece and full of life to brighten up a room, this would look especially stunning on a wooden floor.

Kurdish rugs are rugs woven by the Kurdish people in Middle East, predominantly the larger Kurdistan region including south Caucasus and north-western Persia. This is primarily where the rug weaving industry was and still is today.
