Antique Kurdish rug

Circa 1890
210 × 155 cm 6’10” x 5’1”
£3,250

Description

An interesting and fun tribal antique Kurdish rug woven with an un-dyed camel hair main background colour, this is a weaving trait of the Kurdish weavers who used wool from their herds. These tribal rugs used this un-dyed wool often as a background tone along with vibrant saturated natural dyes.  The colour palette is quite wonderful along with the geometric diamond motifs with stylised flowers.  We love the symmetry of this rug, with one row of 4 small white flowers across the middle of the rug balancing the 12 varying colourful diamond designs either side of them.  The border design consists of stylised S symbols a tribal motif often found in early tribal weavings.  Full of fabulous natural dyes, using pale blues, greens and pinks to add the colour.

These tribal Persian rugs were generally woven in or around the Zagros Mountains area of Northwestern Persia by the Lurs people. These Persian carpets are beautiful tribal art, often primitive but have wonderful designs and colours.  Kurdish rug weavers were mainly woman who adapted and experimented with neighbouring weaving designs and used them in their own carpets. Nomadic rugs of the Kurds of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus used often primitive designs, whereas the the Kurdish Northwest Persia weavers used Caucasian designs of Kazak and Karabagh such as the diagonally striped field or bold geometric motifs.

The pile height of this tribal rug is very good indeed, view all the additional images to see the condition up close.  A wonderful antique Kurdish rug, ready to be used for another 100 plus years.  Book in a showroom visit or home visit to see this rug up close, we look forward to helping you soon.
