A wonderful late 19th century antique Karaja runner woven in the north-west of Persia. Warm colours and bold medallions would enhance any corridor or entrance, the geometric motifs are full of colour and interest. In good condition all over with most of the runner having a high wool pile, a few areas of lower pile in places but still a great durable antique piece.

These runners are woven in the village of Karaja using great natural dyes and tough wool which is why often these are found with a full pile.
Heriz and Karaja are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star. The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use a simpler repeating medallion design with a great array of colour often depicting animals and people.
