Description

Amazing antique Karaja rug with an unusual yellow border in fantastic original condition. The central medallion is more often seen on Caucasian rugs known as Chelaberd and displays the “sun-burst” design.  This shows how weavers would have travelled from Persia to Azerbaijan, Caucasus and taken influences from their weavings.   Dating from the late 19th century, the green in the eight pointed star motifs is truly stunning! A wonderful vibrant tribal rug.

. . .

Antique Karaja rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border.  Their designs generally consisted of 8 pointed star motifs like this piece as well as weaving in animals and people which adds great interest. The sun-burst design is not uncommon or they would weave a more geometric central motif known as a latch-hook design.
