Woven in Sultanabad around 1900-1910, this carpet is in very good condition with lovely soft pale blues and golden yellow vines. An easy carpet to place in a drawing room or under a dining table as it would add great character and colour.  Mahal carpets also do not really have bold central medallions allowing them to sit well with sofas placed on them and not having to worry about it lining up with a fireplace or window.  The condition is good on this antique piece with a good wool pile, a few lower areas in places but not threadbare at all, and generally excellent for its age.  The fringes and sides/selvedges are all in tact and strong for every day use.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
