Antique Gorevan runner

Circa 1900
254 × 71 cm 8’3” x 2’3”
£2,250

Description

A rustic antique Gorevan runner with beautiful natural colours using warm reds, greens, yellows and pale blue dyes.  The geometric design of repeating medallions with stars in the centre is almost quite contemporary in certain ways and could work in both traditional and contemporary settings.  There is some lovely ‘abrash’ which is the term for dye change in the some of the repeating medallions.  This antique runner is in very good condition with a high wool pile and no losses to the fringes, the sides are original in parts and have been tidied up in places.  A lovely antique runner ideal to brighten a corridor or entrance.

Heriz, Karaja and Gorevan villages are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star.  The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use a simpler repeating medallion design with a great array of colour.
