Antique Isfahan carpet

Circa 1920
383 × 250 cm 12’6” x 8’2”
£ POA

Description

A fantastic Persian Isfahan carpet,  woven in around 1920,  which remains in perfect condition.  The colours are unusual,  firstly because a soft terracotta has been used,  rather than the more common red,  which gives the carpet a lovely, calmer look.  There is also an unusual amount of green used throughout the design, together with some beautiful indigo dyes,  starting with a wonderful very soft blue,  moving darker towards a midnight blue used in small amounts.  The pile is made of very finely spun,  wonderfully soft wool,  and the foundation of  both the warp and  weft is silk.  Together with teh soft wool pile,  this gives the carpet a wonderful soft handle and floppiness.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & all throughout the UK by appointment. Please request a home visit to see this remarkable Isfahan carpet in situ or visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey.

Isfahan is situated virtually in the centre of Iran, and was once the capital city. The rugs are woven in the city itself and the surrounding villages. Starting in the early 17th century, their name was renowned throughout Europe – this has continued to the present day. Although rug making was interrupted by the Afghan invasion, it quickly re-established itself as a major centre for the finest handmade carpets. This example show cases why Isfahan are famous for weaving the most detailed, beautiful fine carpets.
