An early example, woven around 1870-80 this Antique Perepedil rug is in extremely good original condition. With vivid and varying dyes of orange and red dyes, some pinks and teal blues, an antique Caucasian rug with great colour and depth. A classical Perepedil design with the famous rams’ horn design in the field, on this occasion repeated throughout, and crisply drawn and well spaced out too. This rug has an unusual ground colour being terracotta – most Perepedils’ being woven with a blue ground. A rare rug for a collector, or to be used as a decorative item.
Perepedil rugs are woven in the Shirvan region of Azerbaijan in the south-eastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
