An amazing antique Mahal carpet with Ziegler elements of design, a large scale floral pattern all over is a design seen more in the late 19th century examples such as Sultanabad. The border colour of saffron yellow is also a rare and scarcely used colour, due to how expense it was to use and create, but it is an exquisite dye to see on this border. Amazing deep indigo blues, greens and off-whites balance the whole composition of this decorative antique carpet. The main field colour is full of abrash (dye change) as the reds change shades throughout, adding depth and huge character. A really stunning example from Mahal in Sultanabad, Persia, woven over 130 years ago.

As wear is more-often caused by a carpet moving on a floor, creating creases which over time turn into wear.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
