Karaja carpets and rugs were woven in the North-West of Persia, not far from the weavers of the Caucasus, which is why we see amazing animal motifs and geometric designs from antique Caucasian rugs.  Look for the lovely small Reindeer motifs shown in this rug, which are a particular highlight.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment. Please request a home visit below to arrange a convenient time to try this antique Karaja carpet and many more in situ.

. . .

Karaja carpets and rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border.  The rugs often use 8 pointed star motifs and sometimes they weave in animals and people which adds great interest. They are easily recognisable with three repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif has the latch-hooked design and the other two are eight-pointed stars.  This large carpet has more of a Heriz design and early Serapi colours mixing all three designs in many ways.
