Antique Ushak carpet

Circa 1900
435 × 347 cm 14’3” x 11’4”

This is a wonderful faded antique Ushak carpet with a gentle palette, ancient motifs a subtle design and exquisite colours.  The dusky pink border colours sits beautifully with the off white tones in the centre, and faded greens in the background with pale blue dyes too.  The design is delicate vines, leaves and central medallion.

Woven in the late 19th Century in Anatolia, western Turkey, these exquisite hand-woven carpets have been produced since the start of the Ottoman period (1300-1922).  The mid to late 19th century examples such as this became more open and decorative in design and were commissioned more for the Western market in the US and Europe and have since rivalled the look of the famous Ziegler carpets from Persia.

The colour and look of Ushak carpets with muted dyes and softer designs really appeal to todays room schemes too.  Easy to place in a room already decorated or to scheme with, fabrics can be chosen to work with a palette as subtle and beautiful as this carpet.

If you would like to request a home visit to see this beautiful and rare pale antique Ushak carpet at home, it would be our pleasure to help you soon.  We love to travel nationwide, having visited private customers and interior designers all over the UK for the last 30 years.

Often younger Ushaks or Oushaks will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs.  This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional.  We clean every carpet before offering it for sale and make sure the ends and fringes are secured.  A decorative subtle piece ideal for a soft scheme.

Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their sometimes softer palette than persian carpets, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire the UK & Europe by appointment. Or visit our large barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey by appointment to view hundreds of rare carpets and rugs.
