Antique Shiraz rug

Circa 1920
151 × 131 cm 4’11” x 4’3”
£850

Description

Shiraz is the capital of the federation of six tribes in the south-west of Persia in the Fars region.  Antique Shiraz rugs are always vivid in design with amazing rosette motifs, star motifs, large geometric patterns in the four corners and a wonderful leaf border.   Usually Shiraz rugs use three connecting medallions in the centre, this design is quite complex and executed by a good nomadic weaver around 1920.  The stars, flowers, and stylised trees circling the central lozenge medallion in an almost diamond shape are rarer to find than most designs.

Condition is good, with some minor losses at both ends, and a small old repair in the central off white medallion, but hard to see unless looking up close.   A wonderful variation of dyes, and abrash in the blues and red tones.  A beautiful antique tribal rug to be used on the floor or hung on a wall.

Book an appointment to view this antique Shiraz rug at home or please come and visit us in our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey by appointment.

If purchased online using our secure checkout, we shall courier the rug to you safely and swiftly.  We ship our rugs worldwide using excellent couriers.

The Qashqai are Persian nomadic tribes that have lived in south-west Persia for centuries. The Qashqai people lived in central Asia and the Caucasus region for many centuries before moving to their current home region. Because of this diverse history, influences from many regions are apparent in their carpets, such as these Boteh designs which we often see in rugs such as Senneh and Caucasian rugs.  More often woven on a wool foundation their handle is loose and with fine soft wool they are beautiful underfoot.
