Antique Ziegler rug

Circa 1890
170 × 123 cm 5’6” x 4’
£7,250

Description

A soft toned Antique Ziegler rug in a rare small size, as most Ziegler & Co workshop carpets were produced in large sizes for drawing rooms.  In excellent condition with a high wool pile throughout, it has beautiful soft colours, gentle terracottas, teal blue greys and green shades.  Woven with an all over lattice design of connecting vines and leaves, this design was used constantly throughout the late 19th century in Sultanabad, Persia.

Both ends/fringes have been professionally restored, as both had a few centimetres of damage.  The pile height is good and since being washed the handle is light too.  A few minor areas of wear, but for a rug of over 130 years old it is still very durable and a beautiful rug.

. . .

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and  Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.
