Stunning early tribal rug from the village of Karaja in the Heriz region, from the last 1/4 of the 19th Century, the dyes and primitive geometric designs and so beautiful and full of interest. Soft saffron deep golden border, a rare variety of green dyes in the eight-pointed star designs, and natural ivory in the main latch-hook medallion. Their are four small tribal designs around the main latch-hook medallion which are the most wonderful shade of blue. Antique rugs are all about their colour and design, and this ancient rug has it in abundance. In excellent condition with minimal wear for a 140 year old rug.
Karaja rugs were woven in the North-West of Persia, not far from the weavers of the Caucasus, which is why we see animal motifs and geometric designs from antique Caucasian rugs. Look for the lovely small Reindeer motifs shown four times around the central medallion.

Antique Karaja rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border. Their designs generally consisted of 8 pointed star motifs like this piece as well as weaving in animals and people which adds great interest. The sun-burst design is not uncommon or they would weave a more geometric central motif known as a latch-hook design.
