Description

From the late 19th century this classical antique Mohtasham Kashan rug was woven in Kashan, Persia, using natural dyes typical of these fine, elegant rugs.  These fine rugs were woven with the finest merino wool which is extremely soft to touch and helped the weavers produce these fine and beautifully detailed rugs.  The condition is distressed with lower areas of pile scattered, the sides are worn and one corner too.  There are a couple of small splits too, but nothing to severe, with good underlay supplied by ourselves this would aid its strength and allow it to be used as a decorative rug on the floor.  A rare Mohtasham Kashan rug that would usually be an elite and expensive piece, obviously due to the rugs condition it is far less expensive.  Mohtasham rugs are famous for purple silk side-cords which you see on the rug and all the close up images.

Kashan was a centre of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets are known as Mohtasham.
