Description
A rare dated antique Karabagh Kelleh with the most outstanding colours, typical of rugs woven in this region of Azerbaijan, they produced exciting and vibrant rugs as well as these longer Kelleh formats. The dating appears to be 1908 and 1326 in the islamic calendar, it could potentially be 100 years older though, as the writing in the weaving does look more like 1226 which would be circa 1810. The large boteh border and colours could support this dating, but always hard to be exact with hand-woven dates! It is definitely at least from 1908 making it over 118 years old.
We can see some lower pile in areas, and a few old repairs in areas too, the whole charm and colours of this piece make it an exceptional one and a really beautiful long carpet, ideal for a hall, dining room or drawing room.
