Description

One of the best antique Bakshaish carpets we have seen in the last 30 years, dating from 1870-1880 and in outstanding original condition, with a sublime soft wool pile all over.  Bakshaish carpets were woven in large and smaller sizes and often with bold geometric designs, and vivid colours. Their designs can be quite abstract and often comprise of a central motif which sprawls out in one large design to the corner spandrels or with a smaller medallion inside a larger medallion.

This Bakshaish however, has a wonderful all over design, using smaller abstract palmette designs in ivory and brown shades, using vines in varying shades of blue and brown tones too.  The main border is a wonderful blue, with unusual geometric motifs and scattered smaller flowers, we can see some fantastic dye change too, using lighter shades of pale blue.

Generally older pieces were more open than younger examples woven from the Heriz region in the North of Persia.  The charm and characteristics of antique carpets from this region woven in the late 19th century are simply wonderful.  A rare example of tribal weaving.

The condition of this carpet is really exceptional, the coarser weave from this type often produces a wooly pile, which is what we you will see on all the additional images.  Minimal preservation to the fringes/ends to secure them.  We love the look, design and palette of this rare early Bakshaish with great natural dyes.   It could definitely work in a traditional setting as well as a contemporary space due to the colours all over abstract design.

The weavers in Bakshaish, from Northern Persia used the influences of tribal weavers from the Caucasian villages in their designs.  These rustic carpets are often a very similar in colour to that of neighbouring Heriz and Serapi carpets and rugs.  The early pieces such as this will always have more muted dyes purely down to their age, the natural yellows and variety of rust reds are only seen in carpets of this vintage.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire, & all over the UK by appointment.  We love to travel, and have been doing so since the early 90’s having visited customers in all over the UK, Scotland, Ireland, France and Belgium helping find the perfect antique or contemporary carpet for their home.  Please request a home visit to see this carpet in situ or email us if we can help you further with your carpet search.
