An early primitive tree design antique Bakshaish carpet woven around 1850-1860, the stylised all over abstract tree design is a beautiful tribal pattern which is rarely seen. The natural dyes have mellowed over the last 160 plus years to produce muted yet warm colours. The condition is good in general, with some old restoration on the main field with some old repairs to the outer border edges.
The weavers in Bakshaish, north Persia used the influences of tribal weavers from the Caucasian villages in their designs. These rustic carpets are often a very similar in colour to that of neighbouring Heriz and Serapi carpets and rugs. The early pieces such as this will always have more muted dyes purely down to their age, the natural yellows and variety of rust reds are only seen in carpets of this vintage.
