Antique Karabagh runner

Circa 1880
456 × 102 cm 14’11” x 3’4”

With lovely soft wool, this exciting colourful antique Karabagh runner dates from around 1880-1890, the all over design of large ‘Boteh’ motifs is a wonderful design.  Full of excellent dyes from the late 19th century, this piece is full of character and colour! Please look at all the additional images to see the colours.  Condition is very good, with only minimal lower areas of pile.  With our underlay included, this attractive antique runner would sit happily on the floor for another 100 years.

Karabagh rugs and runners came in varying designs and colours and were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced interesting tribal caucasian rugs. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the Western market.
