Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1900
415 × 305 cm 13’7” x 10’

This colourful rich palette of dyes, makes for an attractive and beautiful antique Mahal carpet. Woven in Sultanabad around 1900-1910, this carpet is in good condition with wonderful reds, blues and green dyes.  An easy carpet to place in a drawing room or under a dining table as it would add great character and colour.  Mahal carpets also do not really have bold central medallions allowing them to sit well with sofas placed on them and not having to worry about it lining up with a fireplace or window.

The condition is good on this antique piece with a good soft wool pile, a few lower areas in places but not threadbare at all, and generally excellent for its age.  Supplied with our sturdy underlay which keeps a carpet safe and secure on the floor.

Please request a Home Visit then you can try this antique Mahal carpet in-situ and many more carpets to see how they work with your interior.  We have been visiting customers all over the UK since 1990.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
