Description

A wonderful antique Karabagh caucasian rug woven with the date 1880 which can be seen in all the photographs we have added to this listing.  Woven with vibrant colours and the cloud-band design in the two large medallions which we see in Chonderesk Caucasian rugs.  This weaver has used a great variety of Caucasian rug motifs, from the Kufic border design in the ivory outer border to the eight ivory Talish floral rosettes in each corner of the main field.

. . .

The dye change in the green to pale blue in one of the medallions is what draws us to antique rugs from this region.  Unbelievable charm and character, especially as the weaver has woven in the date 1880 twice (look at the bottom of the main image) along with animals and geometric motifs.  A real collectors rug or ideal to add warmth and interest to a room.

The condition is very good with a consistent wool pile nearly throughout the rug.  Some older areas of restoration in areas but no significant damage or repair.  The rug has been thoroughly cleaned by ourselves and is ready to be seen in-situ or shipped worldwide.

Karabagh rugs and runners came in varying designs and colours and were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced interesting tribal caucasian rugs. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the Western market.

Request a home visit to try this antique caucasian rug in-situ at a convenient day and time to suit you. If you would like to view hundreds of antique rugs, please do come and visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey.
