Description

Striking ‘Lesghi’ stars run down the centre of this tribal Kuba rug from the Caucasus, surrounded by a vast array of interesting tribal motifs.  Look for the animals and complexity of all the side-way ’S’ motifs which gather pacer from the bottom of this rug filling almost all of the background as they wove along.  The ’S’ motif is often thought to represent the dragon or the Sun.  The sun embodied the attribute of eternally shining and always nourishing all things natural.  This may be why small “S” motifs are often scattered throughout the field of an antique tribal rug.

Kuba is a rug producing town located in the north-east of the Caucaus next to the Caspian Sea. The port of Baku in Kuba had its own school for carpet-making. An amazing Caucasian rug with great design history and a fantastic array of colours, the indigo is vibrant and the ivory white border gives this rug a lot of life. A real collectors piece in lovely condition, minimal wear and corrosion to the black dyes.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment. Please contact us to arrange an appointment to see this Kuba rug at home or to visit our barn showroom in Surrey.  We would love to welcome you here and show you this antique rug and many more.
